24p: aluminum slats in blue, green and white against a black screen

The project

Public art installation for the Calgary Film Centre, commissioned by Kasian. Created with artist Marta Timmer and fabricated by Carvel Creative in aircraft aluminum with industrial coatings.

The piece is a homage to film’s standard rate of 24 frames per second. A black 16:9 screen stands in for the blank slate of a film not yet made. Across it, 24 mirrored slats, one for each frame, catch the street, the traffic and the people walking by. The edges of each frame are painted through the colour spectrum, the raw material of every cinematic image. It reads from both sides, each a mirror of the other.
