CAMP

With the Council of Artists and Multimedia Professionals, I was able to create workshops and its flagship annual event: CAMP Festival together with a variety of other programming. CAMP became known as two (or three) solidly packed days of cutting-edge creative technology, art and design, with hand-picked speakers from around the world coming together in Calgary, Canada.

Together, we celebrated the art and technology of creative storytelling. Through expert-lead presentations, panels, slowburn sessions, fireside chats, workshops, exhibits, parties, and endless network opportunities, CAMP inspired and educated on the advancements in digital media, pushed creative boundaries, and left you an inspired happy camper.

challenge

In Calgary and the surrounding region, the digital and creative industries were fragmented—small, isolated gatherings of 10–20 people were the norm, often informal and centered around social settings rather than structured opportunity. Meanwhile, through my engagement with post-secondary institutions, it was clear they struggled to keep pace with the evolving needs of the industry.

As a result, recent graduates frequently faced a two-year gap of proving themselves before gaining meaningful placement. CAMP emerged to bridge these gaps—connecting students, educators, and professionals through purposeful networking and real-time insight into an industry in constant motion where they could gain the skills through workshops and lessons from top-tier speakers within the industry.

To connect everyone in the area and celebrate the work, we introduced a theme each year and wrapped new creative around it.

CAMP operated under a non-profit model, where I self-funded a lot of the initiatives. CAMP Festival was called one of Canada's top tech conferences with 118 speakers and thousands of attendees (300-800 per event) from 57 cities across the globe, 25+ million media impressions over 3 days with over 160,000 website visitors.

CAMP hosted over 20 adventure workshops (half and full-day) with an average of 20 attendees per workshop on topics such as touching someone's heart with design; programming in Unity 3D; logo design tips and tricks; illustration and drawing; portrait and fashion photography; video capturing with Gear 260; front-end responsive design and performance; physical computing for web developers; sketchbook lettering; loops in stop-motion; generative virtual reality for the web; and how to play by your own rules utilizing branding exercises.

Today, the gap between education and industry has narrowed, with schools much more aligned to real-world creative and digital demands. It's a shift, I like to believe, CAMP helped catalyze.
