The project

Identity and website for Guns of Purgatory, a short feature film directed by Brock Davis Mitchell. Coming in at the ground floor of a production helps keep everyone's vision cohesive, and we started from the script, the mood boards and a long conversation with the director.

The story could have taken place in the present day but was being told as a period piece, so we aimed for something timeless. Colour was stripped out from the start to match the film's dark, dramatic tone. After a few identity sketches, the work moved to texture, a style guide and the website.

The wordmark's wide letter-spacing leaves room for viewers to connect the dots of the story themselves. Tall capitals suggest standing room only, and the significance, guts and pride of the story and its characters. Then the lettering is scratched and textured, knocking that strength down a notch to show the physical and emotional vulnerability the characters live through.

Production companies

The weekend before the film's reveal, the production companies behind it asked for new looks of their own to complement the Guns of Purgatory logotype. This animation sequence introduces First Degree Films and Rocky Mountain Productions.
